Fly By Night

Commonwealth High School held their 13th annual Fly By Night activity from September 18th to 19th, 2015. Over the past few years Fly by Night has been organized by Zayra Gotay, who invited various schools to participate in the weekend’s event. The night began with a set of workshops on acting and scriptwriting techniques. Later, students were randomly divided into groups, each containing two writers, one director, and four actors. The writers spent Friday night developing a script to be rehearsed and presented the next day.

Fly By Night is regarded by the students as an excellent way to meet others from different schools through a common interest in performing arts. There were a total of six plays performed, “Alex in Ozland”, “Mexicans Stole the Show”, “Karma is B…”, “Los monólogos del pensamiento por un día”, “Train Ride”, and “Invisibles”.

Contrary to popular belief, Fly By Night is not isn’t just for experienced actors and writers; anyone can participate.

“There’s a part for everyone,” said CHS student Miguel Rivera.

Overall, when it comes to the decision on whether or not to join Fly By Night “You shouldn’t think about it [too much] and just do it. It doesn’t matter [if you don’t know how to act or write] they teach you here and give you works shops… I even wrote a play myself last year with the help of the director,” said Gabriela Escalante a participant from Episcopal Cathedral School.
